We are pushing The Clockmaker to Spring of 2020! Submissions will be open until August 12th.
Gangway! Theatre Co. and The Edge Productions are presenting Stephen Massicotte’s The Clockmaker, Directed by Miriam Goldstein, at Grand Canyon Theatre in Toronto!
Show dates have been pushed to April and rehearsals will commence at the end of March.
“WHO ARE YOU?” Monsieur Pierre (the immigration official) poses his usual question, but Heinrich’s unusual answer sets in motion a metaphysical rollercoaster. Why would a simple statement of name and profession bring so much attention to an unassuming clockmaker? Maybe because that’s two more things than anyone else in this place remembers…? Soon, Heinrich is reminding his new friend Frieda of memories she’s forgotten and even summoning up a few of his own—of forbidden love, and crimes he may or may not have committed. Is it possible to be guilty of being about to commit a crime, as Monsieur Pierre suspects? And why wouldn’t one recall something so significant as premeditating murder? Armed with a newfound-yet-familiar love for each other, Heinrich and Frieda set about solving this Kafkaesque puzzle. Winner of the Betty Mitchell Award for Best New Play (2009) and named best Canadian play of the 2010-2011 season at the inaugural Toronto Theatre Critics’ Awards.

Gordon
is a Brooklyn-based lyricist and bookwriter from Chagrin Falls, Ohio. His musicals have been produced/performed/read at Ars Nova, Diversionary Theatre, Dixon Place, The Director’s Company, Joe’s Pub, Lincoln Center Directors Lab, Prospect Theater Company, Weston Playhouse, Williamstown Theatre Festival, and the York Theatre Company. Gordon’s work was awarded the 2009 Richard Rodgers Award and has received grants and awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Dramatists Guild Foundation, the NAMT National Fund for New Musicals, and OPERA America. His musicals have been chosen for development through the Daegu International Musical Festival, National Alliance for Musical Theatre’s Festival of New Musicals, Penn State Nu.Musicals, Seoul Musical Festival, and the Yale Institute for Music Theatre. Outside of theatre, Gordon has been a teaching artist with the Metropolitan Opera Guild and Encores in Schools.  He has written a number of books for English EGG, a Korean English-language educational publisher.  He tries to practice piano as much as he can (so his childhood full of lessons doesn’t go to waste) and loves to draw and paint.  If you want to know a secret, Gordon has seen every episode of every city of the Real Housewives series, but don’t judge (at least not too harshly.)

In honour of tomorrows opening night in Windsor, I thought I'd share my program note with everyone a day early.

Welcome to another season with The Edge Productions. This is our ninth year in operation and our eighth full season!

When our company was founded in 2010, it had a simple goal - tell stories we find compelling, make bold choices, work on pieces we care about and elevate voices that often get dismissed. We dreamt of a world where taboo subjects were normalized, risky shows were just shows and our audiences would be eclectic and from all walks of life. It sounds pretentious and likely seems unreasonable but this seemingly snooty and insane dream has taken us from contemporary plays to reinterpreted classical text but in 2019 we are getting back to where The Edge started… the musical. Of the 4 shows we’re producing this year only one, The Clockmaker by Stephen Massicotte, is a play. The other three are driven by music.

I don’t know if 7 seasons of nearly all plays left me missing the ability of the musical to exist in a heightened reality of beauty, melody and emotional honesty or if I suddenly found that the world was too difficult to exist in without a little harmony and gorgeous music supporting the emotional weight we’ve all been feeling, maybe it’s both, but truth-seeking musicals are back at The Edge Productions.

We start our season with Pregnancy Pact (Book & Lyrics by Gordon Leary & Music by Julia Meinwald). It is hard hitting, funny and emotional… it also is focused on a group of teenage girls who choose to get pregnant between the ages of 15 and 17. It was inspired by the media craze surrounding the rumoured Gloucester Pregnancy Pact. In 2008 approximately 18 high school girls got pregnant at the same school. The adults pleaded that, “the girls made a pregnancy pact” while the girls in question say they hadn’t done anything of the kind and the media created such a circus that the town is still haunted by it today.

This piece, though inspired by the 2008 story, is an examination of what motivates a teenager to choose this kind of commitment or disruption, it’s an examination of friendship and an examination of consequences to young, formative choices. In a world that values grown over young voices and in a world in which we don’t tend to listen to teenagers at all, this is a story entirely told by the teenagers who make it up. With no adult characters Pregnancy Pact allows us deep and unfiltered access to the psyche of these teens.

We hope you find something in Pregnancy Pact, the way every single one of us has and we hope you stick with us for the rest of the season. Our new collaboration with Toronto-based company Gangway! Theatre Co is an incredible step towards our newest goal of making theatre in Canada less insular and we can’t wait for our next co-production in the fall.

Check out our full season here!

Sincerely & With Love,
Miriam Goldstein
Artistic Director

And if you've read this whole note, you've earned this frightening picture of me from 2008!

The Edge Productions & Gangway! Theatre Partnering...

2/12/2019

Picture
The Edge Productions and Gangway! Theatre Co. are going to be collaborating on 2 productions a year, starting this year!

Miriam Goldstein of
The Edge and Blythe Hanes of Gangway! believe that theatre can often be very insular and isolated from the theatrical community outside of the city you work in. Gangway! Theatre Co, like the Edge, focuses on telling stories with unique voices and perspectives.

Over the past two years The Edge has been actively trying to break the vacuum seal and change the theatrical landscape by bringing shows to cities beyond Windsor-Essex County and by engaging both local and out of town artists. This partnership is the next step in this mission. Last summer The Edge's all-female Henry V toured and sold out in six cities, while Venus in Fur this fall was met with rave reviews in both Windsor and Toronto. Pregnancy Pact will join these shows in traveling out of town and our new partnership with Gangway! Theatre will actively create channels for artists from different areas to connect and work together.

This exciting musical will start with a limited run in Windsor before moving to Toronto for a more extended run. Entering our 9th season, The Edge Productions, in collaboration with Gangway! Theatre Co., is bringing the deeply empathetic and hard hitting musical about a high-school pregnancy pact back to Canada. Previously produced by The Edge Productions in 2017 and performed in Windsor with an entirely student cast, Pregnancy Pact is back for a professional run in May of 2019. This is Pregnancy Pacts professional Canadian Premiere.

Coming back from the 2017 cast;
Samantha Bourque as Maddie
Miranda DiPietro as Brynn
& Sean Sennett as Corey/Justin

Pregnancy Pact is a pop-rock musical which tells the story of a group of teens who make a pact to become single mothers together. The 15-year-old Maddie is devoted to her three best friends and they are to her. So, when Brynn gets pregnant, the friends all plan to have children, raising them together and living a dream. Inspired by the 2008 news story of the Gloucester pregnancy pact that took the world by storm, Pregnancy Pact provides a unique chance to examine the intense journey this kind of decision creates.
