About Pregnancy Pact!

The Edge Productions is bringing the deeply empathetic and hard hitting musical about a high-school pregnancy pact back to Canada. Previously produced by The Edge Productions in 2017 and performed in Windsor with an entirely student cast, Pregnancy Pact is back for a professional run in Toronto from May 1st through May 19th. This is Pregnancy Pacts professional Canadian Premiere. This is the first co-production with our new Toronto partners at Gangway! Theatre Co!
Pregnancy Pact is a pop-rock musical, with book & lyrics by Gordon Leary and music by Julia Meinwald, which tells the story of a group of teens who make a pact to become single mothers together. The 15-year-old Maddie is devoted to her three best friends and they are to her. So, when Brynn gets pregnant, the friends all plan to have children, raising them together and living a dream. Inspired by the 2008 news story of the Gloucester pregnancy pact that took the world by storm, Pregnancy Pact provides a unique chance to examine the intense journey this kind of decision creates.

EYES ON WINDSOR: Pregnancy Pacts Incredible Cast Shines in Professional Canadian Premiere
BROADWAY WORLD: PREGNANCY PACT Musical Transports Audiences To 2008 |
![]() Julia Meinwald is a New York City based composer who likes writing for musical theatre (and the occasional film and computer game score) and eating kimchi.
Her musicals include PREGNANCY PACT, REB + VoDKa + ME, THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN, THE LONELIEST GIRL IN THE WORLD, SOMETHING BLUE and ELEVATOR HEART. She and her collaborator Gordon Leary write aggressively empathetic shows that help them understand completely foreign points of view, like Anita Bryant's save-our-children crusade, online fan communities that formed around high school shooters, and groups of teenage girls who decide to get pregnant together. Julia's work has been produced at the Weston Playhouse and Diversionary Theatre, and developed through awesome groups like Ars Nova, the Civilians, Fresh Ground Pepper, the Dramatists Guild, Page 73 and exciting acronyms like 92Y, MTF, NAMT, NYMF, and YIMT. ![]() Miriam Goldstein is a theatre director and producer based in Windsor, On. She is the founding Artistic Director of The Edge Productions, now entering its ninth season. Miriam’s work as a director focuses on underrepresented human experiences. Miriam is a graduate of the Ward Acting Studio in New York, NY where she studied the Meisner Technique, she holds a certificate in Shakespeare in Performance and Contemporary Acting from the Royal Academy of Drama in London, UK, and a Bachelor of Art in Drama from the University of Windsor. Miriam’s most recent project (as of summer, 2018) was an all-female production of Henry V by William Shakespeare which focused on deconstructing gender in performance and the construct of theatre itself, putting women in roles that have historically been barred from them. This performance toured Ontario and also performed, pro-bono, in Grand Valley Institute for Women (a prison in Kitchener, ON).

![]() Gordon Leary is a Brooklyn-based lyricist and bookwriter from Chagrin Falls, Ohio. His musicals have been produced/performed/read at Ars Nova, Diversionary Theatre, Dixon Place, The Director’s Company, Joe’s Pub, Lincoln Center Directors Lab, Prospect Theater Company, Weston Playhouse, Williamstown Theatre Festival, and the York Theatre Company. Gordon’s work was awarded the 2009 Richard Rodgers Award and has received grants and awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Dramatists Guild Foundation, the NAMT National Fund for New Musicals, and OPERA America. His musicals have been chosen for development through the Daegu International Musical Festival, National Alliance for Musical Theatre’s Festival of New Musicals, Penn State Nu.Musicals, Seoul Musical Festival, and the Yale Institute for Music Theatre. Songs by Gordon have been heard at 54 Below, 92Y Tribeca, Auckland Art Gallery, Laurie Beechman Theatre, D-Lounge, Duplex, Goodspeed, Lincoln Center’s Bruno Walter Auditorium, NYMF, New York Theatre Barn, Rockwood Musical Hall, Symphony Space, and the Triad.
Gordon was a 2009-2010 Dramatists Guild Musical Theatre Fellow and a member of Ars Nova’s 2013-2014 Uncharted, The Civilians’ 2015-2016 R&D Group, Fresh Ground Pepper’s 2016 Playground Playgroup, The Musical Theatre Factory’s 2016-2017 Lerner & Loewe Group, the 92Y Musical Theatre Development Lab’s 2017-2018 Collective, and Page 73’s 2018 Interstate 73. Gordon writes aggressively empathetic musicals about American pop history, identity, celebrity, growing up, mothers, legacies, and people making terrible choices. Outside of theatre, Gordon has been a teaching artist with the Metropolitan Opera Guild and Encores in Schools. He has written a number of books for English EGG, a Korean English-language educational publisher. He tries to practice piano as much as he can (so his childhood full of lessons doesn’t go to waste) and loves to draw and paint. If you want to know a secret, Gordon has seen every episode of every city of the Real Housewives series, but don’t judge (at least not too harshly.) Gordon is a proud graduate of Vassar College and NYU/Tisch’s Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program. |
